Google has announced updates to its Google News US homepage aimed at offering a more personalised way to browse news.
New features include a News For You section that streams headlines according to categories selected by users and the option to give prominence to stories from certain sources, says Kevin Stolt, a software engineer at Google, in a post on the Google blog .
The navigation and design of the news page have also been updated. Users can view news in Section or List format and see related article links by hovering over headlines. The new design will also encourage users to share stories on social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, Buzz and Reader.
The new features are currently only available on the US edition of Google News, but the search giant plans to make the changes across all language versions, says Stolt.
Today's changes follow the launch of Google News' Spotlight section last September, which will be more prominently displayed by the page's new design. The section was designed to highlight "in-depth pieces of lasting value".
