Channel 4 and Guardian News and Media lead the nominations for this year's One World Media Awards , with six places each on the shortlist.

The awards, which recognise quality reporting of foreign affairs and the developing world, are now in their 24th year and this year include a new award for hard-hitting news pieces in print, broadcast or online.

Channel 4's coverage of Sri Lanka is shortlisted twice - in the TV and general news award. The broadcaster is also nominated for its reports from Somalia, Syria, and the work of journalist Jamal Osman. Sister channel More4 is shortlisted in the newly introduced sustainable development category.

Guardian News and Media dominates the press award, with nominations for two Observer Magazine pieces and a G2 article on Pakistan. The Guardian is also shortlisted for the sustainable development award and the news award, and the paper's Felicity Lawrence is nominated for journalist of the year.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 8 May, presented by Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow, which will culminate in the presentation of a special award for an outstanding media project in the developing world.

One World Media director Marion Bowman said in a release: "2011 was an extraordinary year for international news - from the Arab spring spreading across the Middle East to the drought crisis in the Horn of Africa.

"In this context, the awards play a very important role in highlighting the significant work international journalists are doing in covering these stories and bringing them to UK audiences - often risking their own lives to do so.

"Never before has media had a more important and challenging role to play on a planet increasingly fractured by poverty and intolerance.

"Good media can help strengthen democracies, save lives and promote understanding and tolerance in UK audiences, which is why it is crucial to recognise the incredible work they do."
