Journalists choose independence over churnalism

Non-traditional news formats will lead the way in 2026, with more hyperlocal news websites operating than ever before. As great journalists are moulded into ‘churnalists’ at big publishers, staff will break free from employment and build their own audience to serve high-quality content.
The public is increasingly putting their trust in social media content creators for news, so experienced journalists will turn to platforms like TikTok and Facebook to create engaging videos and make a living by connecting with online audiences. Something that’s already happening, and will continue, is the launch of independent news brands on Substack, Ghost and other membership-focused hosts. Small outlets with strong community ties will thrive by offering trusted reporting and direct access to journalists.
TikTok will execute powerful algorithm adjustments specifically for news. 2025 saw the addition of links on posts for some publishers. But the platform cannot afford another year of declining reach and revenue for credible reporters and creators, many of whom they helped to create through revenue sharing in the early days. To retain them, TikTok will likely re-prioritise original reporting, explainers and breaking news content, while improving the largely AI-driven moderation system and reducing misinformation.
I believe the industry in 2026 will be defined by trust, transparency and the rise of independent, personality-driven video content creators with newsroom experience and the very best journalism skills.
