The founder of the financial newswire service Bloomberg has been awarded a lifetime achievement award at this year's Webby awards for his "lifelong continued devotion to technology and innovation".

Michael Bloomberg, who has been mayor of New York since 2002, was praised for creating one of the world's first digital media companies when he set up Innovative Market Systems using a $10 million redundancy payout from an investment bank in 1981.

The company, renamed Bloomberg in 1986, was praised by Webby judges for the way it "completely changed the way financial professionals interact with information in real time".

They added: "Bloomberg offered online services before the web even existed."

Bloomberg was also commended for his work as a strong advocate of the city's technology scene. He was presented with the award by Tumblr founder and chief executive David Karp at a ceremony in New York last night.

Webby winners are allowed a five-word acceptance speech. Bloomberg's was: "Make it here, then everywhere."
