Officers carrying out Scotland Yard's investigation into "allegations of inappropriate payments to police" made their eighth arrest today, of a 52-year-old serving Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officer.
According to a statement by the MPS the officer was arrested "on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and offences contrary to the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906".
"The 52-year-old woman was arrested at a residential address in Essex and is currently in custody at an Essex police station," the statement added.
According to police, this is the eighth arrest made by Operation Elveden, following that of a 37-year old woman on Thursday last week (15 December), widely reported to be former News of the World crime editor Lucy Panton.
Other connected investigations have made a total of 17 arrests, police confirmed, including 16 by phone-hacking investigation Operation Weeting and one under Operation Tuleta, which is looking into alleged breaches of privacy "which fell outside the remit of Operation Weeting", said to include computer hacking.
Operation Elveden is being overseen by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), the MPS statement added.
