A new regional journalism awards programme organised by the Society of Editors opened for entries today.
The new 'Society of Editors Regional Press Awards' will judge the work of regional and local newspapers during 2010, with the support of members of the Newspaper Society. Entries can be submitted online until 8 March and shortlists will be published in early April before the awards ceremony takes place on 11 May. The judging panel for the awards will be chaired by newspaper consultant and designer Peter Sands. The decision to run a new regional press awards followed an arrangement last year between the Society of Editors and the Newspaper Publishing Association to also organise a National Press Awards this year. A regional press awards was held last year by the National Union of Journalists after former organisers Wilmington Group announced it would not be running the event.
It is not yet known if the NUJ plans to run its own event again this year. The Society of Editors says it plans to review the scheme after the first year.
