News Corporation has announced a 15 per cent increase in advertising revenues within its UK newspaper group in the fourth quarter – boosted by lower operating costs.

News International - publisher of the Times, the Sunday Times, the News of the World and the Sun - reported higher operating income contributions from April to June this year.

News Corporation reported a global net income for the last full year of $2.5 billion, compared to a net loss of $3.4 billion reported in fiscal 2009.

"For the full year, higher operating income contributions reflect lower operating expenses due to cost containment initiatives, partially offset by lower circulation revenue," it adds in the report.

Commenting on the results Rupert Murdoch said an overall increase of 30 per cent in growth was a positive sign.

"I am very pleased with the overall 30 per cent increase, which is more than three times the growth we were projecting when we started the fiscal year," he said in the report. "Despite the volatility of world economies, News Corporation continues to thrive on a truly global scale.

The company's global newspapers and information services reported an operating income for the fourth quarter of $115 million, an increase of 20 per cent on the same period in the previous year.
