News reader app Pulse has announced a new 'premium sources' service, which will enable users of the app to subscribe to select content from the Wall Street Journal. In a blog post Pulse outlines the new feature which will operate using Apple iOS in-app subscriptions, where users will be able to pay for access to content from three WSJ channels: WSJ Watercooler, WSJ Political Report, and WSJ Technology Digest.

WSJ Watercooler costs $0.99 per month and according to Pulse offers stories selected for the app by editors at the Wall Street Journal. The other two channels, WSJ Technology Digest and WSJ Political Report, are said to provide more in-depth coverage and cost $3.99 a month.

"For too long, the design of checkout flow user experience has been a second-order consideration in paid news products.

"With the introduction of premium sources, we are committing to always put the user first and to only offer exceptional content at a great price.

"To ensure that we’re providing the most seamless experience possible, in this release premium sources are only available for purchase on iOS devices. Once purchased, users will be able to access them across all of their favorite phones and tablets."

The service is being launched in partnership with the Wall Street Journal.

Managing editor of the Wall Street Journal Digital Network Raju Narisetti told Journalism.co.uk: "It is part of our WSJ Everywhere strategy where we want to make sure our premium content is available wherever our audiences want to pay for and consume it.

"As other business models evolve and move closer to our own model - paid content - and acquire the ability to offer subscriptions and pay models, we are glad to partner with Pulse and others."

In its blog post Pulse says it has "many more exclusive and noteworthy premium source offerings in the works and we look forward to announcing these selections soon".
