Two British journalists working for the Iranian broadcaster Press TV have been arrested in Libya, the Foreign Office confirmed this weekend.

Reporter Nicholas Davies and cameraman Gareth Montgomery-Johnson have been held in Tripoli since Wednesday, alongside two local men, Press TV announced on its website .

The Foreign Office said in a statement: "We can confirm that two British nationals have been detained. The embassy in Tripoli is providing consular assistance."

Montgomery-Johnson, a graduate from Falmouth University's broadcast journalism course, has been covering the Libyan conflict for Press TV since last summer.

His sister Melanie Gribble told the South Wales Evening Post : "The reason he was arrested was they said he posed a security threat and they didn't believe that he was an accredited journalist. We have sent his credentials to Human Rights Watch.

"We are hopeful he will be released soon but you never know. We have just got to keep up the good fight. We are incredibly tired."
