Rebekah Brooks
News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks received an honorary degree from the University of Arts London last night in recognition of her outstanding contribution to journalism and the media.

Brooks began her career at Messenger Newspapers in Warrington before going on to study journalism at the London College of Printing, which has since been renamed the London College of Communication. She recently returned to the college to give the prestigious Hugh Cudlipp lecture.

Brooks was made editor of the News of the World in 2000, and went to become the first female editor of the Sun in 2003. She was appointed chief executive of News International last year.

Other media figures to have received an honorary degree from the university include Suzy Menkes OBE, Joan Bakewell CBE, Tina Brown, Sir Harold Evans, Sir Robert Phillis and Sir John Hegarty.
