The MPs' expenses story dominated last night's British Press Awards, which saw the Daily Telegraph named newspaper of the year.

The Telegraph, which broke the MPs' expenses story, picked up six awards in total, including journalist of the year for editor-in-chief Will Lewis and political journalist of the year for Robert Winnett.

Its special MPs' expenses supplement was also praised and the story was named scoop of the year. Investigative journalist Heather Brooke was presented with a special award, acknowledging her role in the expenses' expose.

"I don't begrudge the Telegraph and I hope they don't begrudge me," she said last night.

News International titles took nine awards, including best digital innovation for its online radio broadcast SunTalk.

The Daily Mail took three prizes, while its Sunday counterpart won two. The Guardian equalled that tally with two awards, including reporter of the year for Paul Lewis for his reports exposing the details of the death of newspaper seller Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protests.
