Newspapers and news sites have played an important role in the launch of the latest feature from social networking site Twitter.

Yesterday the service launched its Tweet Button to allow readers to easily share links to articles and web content via Twitter without leaving the page.

Twitter says 30 sites have implemented the new button and 16 of these launch sites are news and journalism sites. According to a blog post from the social network, the new tool took less than a week to add to the sites, which include the Sky News blogs , the Huffington Post, USA Today and several regional US newspapers.

The button is a development of existing products used by websites, such as Tweetmeme used by Journalism.co.uk. Tweetmeme is working with Twitter on the launch of the new feature.
