The company said today the new sites would go "beyond news and information" to become users' "first port of call for whatever they want to know, do or find in their regions".

Roland Bryan, managing director of Northcliffe Digital , the local digital arm of Daily Mail General Trust (DMGT), said that the network was redesigned with social interaction in mind.

"The new sites are built around our users and promote interaction between people, local businesses and our content. Every piece of content across the This is network has calls to action to allow our users the opportunity to create, respond or discuss.

"As the internet becomes more social, it’s crucial that we enable conversations between individuals in the community, the businesses that serve them as well as the journalists who are leading the local news agenda."

According to a statement from Northcliffe Digital, the 26 sites get a total of 5.9 million monthly unique users and reached 54 per cent of the local online population.

The new sites will also offer local business the opportunity to set up profile pages with images and video content, and the ability to highlight featured customer reviews.

DMGT said in February that it would entertain approaches for Northcliffe, a planned sale of which fell through in 2005.
