Renowned journalist Patrick Cockburn will be awarded an honorary degree at the University of Kent later this month.

Cockburn, who is a Middle East correspondent for the Independent, will receive the accolade at a ceremony on 19 November at Canterbury Cathedral, according to a release from the university.

He has won several awards for his journalism and is the author of a number of books on Iraq. In 2009 he won the Orwell Prize for political writing for six articles written for the Independent and the London Review of Books covering both Iraq and the story of his son Henry's mental illness.

Cockburn has reported on the Middle East since 1979, working for the Financial Times prior to joining the Independent.
