The photojournalism and press photography course at Sheffield College is likely to return in November - but students will have to pay the entire course fee of £3,600. Journalism.co.uk reported last month that the course, which is accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), was at risk of following in the footsteps of its part-time version, which had been closed due to a lack of demand.

Applications for the full-time course in 2009/10 were dangerously low, at just 13, leaving the college considering its options for the future.

Today Andrew Cropley, principal of Norton College, which is part of Sheffield College, said there has been "sufficient" demand for a new course which will begin in November providing a suitable tutor can be found. But students will have to foot the bill.

“The college has received sufficient interest from prospective students to justify recruiting a new tutor," he said in a statement. "We are advertising the post this month. The course is due to start in November once a suitably skilled and qualified lecturer has been appointed."

Former course leader Paul Delmar left the course earlier this year. The college refused to comment on rumours that he had taken voluntary redundancy, but confirmed a scheme had been launched in the previous year.

"We would like to thank former course leader Paul Delmar for his outstanding commitment and contribution to the college and his students," Cropley added. "Paul is highly respected and has inspired scores of photographers to succeed. He will be sorely missed. We wish him all the very best for the future.”

Last year students on the course were only required to pay part of the costs, on average at around £1,500.
