The Professional Publishers Association (PPA) has announced the shortlist for its latest awards event, which includes for the first time an online public poll for the new front cover of the year category.
Hearst Magazines UK leads the consumer-side of the shortlist with 24 nominations, followed by IPC Media with 15 and ShortList Media and Condé Nast at 10 nominations each.
According to the PPA it received more than 700 entries from a total of 77 companies, which were whittled down to a shortlist .
The awards cover 22 categories in total, including writer of the year, digital product of the year and editor of the year, with separate awards for business and consumer titles.
This year sees two new categories introduced, including front cover of the year and the PPA diversity award which will go to a title which has "demonstrated an ongoing commitment to promoting diversity in their pages over the last year".
The winning front cover will be chosen by the public with an online poll being run by PPA for the first time, with a choice of 15 shortlisted magazines. Voting will run until Thursday 31 May.
The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday 20 June in London.
CEO of the PPA Barry McIlheney said in a press release that he is "delighted to involve the great British public for the first time ever in the vote for front cover of the year".
"Covers are the face of a magazine brand. They are able to excite, tease, and talk to readers in a uniquely powerful way, and this eclectic shortlist is a showcase of the vibrant creativity within our industry right now."
Last year's awards saw womens' lifestyle magazine Red, published by Hachette Filipacchi, named Consumer Magazine of the Year. The full shortlist for the PPA awards 2012 is below:
