Centaur Media has closed down its Public Sector Building magazine due to government cuts in the sector and the impact on advertising revenues.
The magazine, which has been in production for more than 20 years, was published six times a year according to the company's Buildingtalk website. Publishing director Derek Rogers told Journalism.co.uk that advertisers were polled and as a result the title was closed for "commercial reasons".
"The feeling within our company is that as the government's public sector cuts begin to take hold, the reduction in activity in public sector construction will be such as to make the continued publication of PSB marginal and that advertisers would be unlikely to support a title in an area of construction that is of diminishing value to them, hence we have decided to cease publication immediately in order we don’t incur losses which would have been otherwise avoidable."
"We felt that looking forward for at least the next year, it would be very difficult to produce the title profitably," he added.
"In light of that we felt that it would be appropriate to pull the magazine from the market."
Out of the five members of staff working on the title, three were retained by the company, he added, while the remaining two, the editor and a part-time member of staff, were made redundant.
