Four of the UK's leading national newspaper websites have posted their highest ever monthly user figures, according to data from the Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic (ABCE) .

The Times, Telegraph, Guardian and the Sun all beat previous highs to receive record figures in September. Timesonline.co.uk had the largest increase with 12,536,438 unique users on its site last month. Nearly 2.3 million more users - 22.4 per cent - from the previous month.

Prior to this its record level of unique users was 10,891,378 posted in January this year.

The new figure means the Times leapfrogs the Sun and the Mail into second spot in the list of the UK's popular national newspaper websites. The Guardian , the UK's most popular newspaper site by the ABCE unique user metric, recorded its highest total for unique users with a rise of 5.6 per cent from 15,821,480 in August to 16,706,076 last month.

The site's previous high was 16,062,221 recorded May. It now attracts 3,732,323 more visitors a month than in September, 2006. Telegraph.co.uk also passed a milestone last month, as its unique user total broke the 10 million barrier for the first time, recording 10,645,220 uniques.

Figures for the site showed an increase of 874,658 unique users in September, 8.9 per cent more users than its previous highest total of 9,770,562 - achieved in August.

The Sun recorded a small increase of 80,110 users (0.8 per cent) since pushing past the 10 million barrier for the first time itself last month. It recorded a monthly figure of 10,674,308 unique users for August. The Daily Mail was the only national newspaper site reporting monthly figures that did not post a record total.

It did, however, post growth in both page views and unique users this month, ranking as the third most popular national newspaper site with 11,689,985 unique visitors to the site.

The Sun was the fourth most popular after the Guardian,Times and the Mail, the Telegraph remained fifth.
