Manchestereveningnews.co.uk won "Electronic News Site of the Year" in the 2007 Newspaper Awards last night, beating off stiff competition from Guardian Unlimited, BBC News and Times Online.

Judges of the awards, which were announced at a black tie event in London, complemented the regional daily newspaper site for its contemporary look and successful combination of "the style elements of a blog with the sensibilities of a serious news organisation".

"MEN offers an impressive range of web delivery mechanisms. Use of audio, video and RSS and the provision of user contributions put the site in the same league as some of the nationals," they added.

Highly commended in the same category was BBC News , described by one judge as a "model site for online news publishers everywhere", and praised for its "breadth and quality of content, digital delivery mechanisms, site design and accessibility". Timesonline.co.uk was also commended for its "clean and uncluttered look" that is a "joy to navigate". One judge singled this site out as "the best looking... in its category".

In the "Most Innovative Technology of the Year" category, the Financial Times was rewarded for its mobile news reader, a technology that allows users to access ft.com on their mobile phone or BlackBerry. Whtimes.co.uk was highly commended for its virtual newsreader and www.thisisplymouth.co.uk was commended for its reporters' use of head-mounted video cameras to capture material while leaving their hands free to take notes.
