Reuters has appointed a new managing editor for multimedia to oversee the development of Reuters television, pictures and graphics units.

Mark Thompson, currently managing editor for Europe, Middle East and Africa, will take up the executive position. Based in London, Thompson will report to Chris Cramer , global editor for multimedia, a press release from the news agency says.

In the release, Cramer says Thompson's appointment is part of "the next phase of our multimedia strategy". Reuters restructured its multimedia division in February 2009 , bringing five global editorial groups - television, pictures, Reuters financial video service, online and agency - under its remit. Earlier this month the division launched Reuters Insider , a business-to-business video news platform.

In an additional appointment, Brian Rhoads, who is currently Reuters' managing editor for The Americas, has been appointed as Asia managing editor. Rhoads will move to Hong Kong for the new role, which he will start in mid-July.
