The Royal Television Society (RTS) has launched its journalism awards for 2010/2011, which are now open to entries. At last year's awards, presented in February, Sky News was named

News Channel of the Year, beating the BBC and Al Jazeera English. The RTS awards, which celebrate creativity and excellence in journalism in UK news and current affairs coverage, offer prizes in five streams: news awards, current affairs awards, nations and regions awards, other awards and awards chosen by the judges. As well as recognising the work of news organisations, the awards also give credit to independent producers or freelancers through an Independent Award. Entries to the awards must have been first transmitted in the UK between 16 November 2010 and 15 November 2011, and can be submitted until 25 November. An awards ceremony will be held on 22 February next year in London.

In the call for entries chair of the awards Richard Sambrook, said the awards "are an excellent way of recognising the extraordinary breadth of talent we have and the public would be poorer without the invention, dedication and skill possessed by those working in this area".
