Scraperwiki is to run its first ever student version of its Hacks and Hackers event next month at Liverpool John Moores University.

The data journalism workshop, which is being run in partnership with Open Labs, will bring to together journalism and computing students to research and present news stories based on online data.

In total around 40 students are expected to take part in the workshop, working in teams with their mentors. Each team will have to present their project to the judges, with a final prize for the most interesting and well-presented.

This follows a number of similar events held by ScraperWiki and other groups across the country for professional journalists and programmers.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to have hands-on experience at combining traditional news-gathering with programming," journalism lecturer Steve Harrison, who helped organise the event, said in a release.

"With the present focus on apps, mash-ups and all things data-related, it will be a great learning experience."

The day long workshop will take place on 8 December at Liverpool John Moores University's Art and Design Academy. LJMU students can book for one of a limited number of places online.
