A first year journalism student from Sheffield University has been named as one of three overall winners of the Young Reporters Against Poverty contest, receiving the prize in the Best Written Article category. Katie Davies was originally shortlisted for the contest , which is organised by the European Journalism Centre, as one of 33 journalism and communications students selected from 180 entrants.

Along with the other finalists Davies attended the European Union's European Development Days last year, where she reported on the events.

After perfecting her best article Davies was named one of three overall winners, along with Alba Malaga Homs (Spain) and Chiara Zappalà (Italy), who will now take part in a press trip to Tanzania to report on the work of EuropeAid.

"It's an honour to be picked, I still can't believe it - all of the finalists were great people, really talented, and we just had so much fun together," Davies told Journalism.co.uk.

"It really was a great chance to learn from some experienced reporters in Brussels. It's not an opportunity I think I could have got anywhere else, especially as a 1st year BA student."
