A shortlist of 176 entrants has been drawn up for the 2008 BOBs - Deutsche Welle 's awards recognising blogs promoting freedom of opinion and press freedom. The shortlisted entrants have been placed in 16 categories with prizes for the best blogs in Chinese, Persian, Arabic, Spanish, Russian, Portugese, English, French and Dutch up for grabs.

Nominees in this years competition, which received a record number of entrants with 8,500 submissions, will have the chance to win a 'people's choice award, voted on by the public. This open voting process will close on November 26, an announcement on the BOBs website said.

A jury prize will also be awarded in each category in a ceremony on November 27.
