A group of top media brands — including the BBC, The Guardian, Mediahuis, Sky News, and The Associated Press — has launched a "market first", industry-wide standard designed to give publishers visibility over how artificial intelligence (AI) companies use their news content.

The SPUR Coalition (Standards for Publisher Usage Rights) launched earlier this year in a bid to protect the rights of media publishers and prevent AI companies from scraping, misusing or profiting from their work without permission.

30 new publishers join SPUR Coalition, in global expansion for AI standards
The Coalition welcomes a flurry of new members, including CMA Media, The Globe and Mail, Ringier, Der Standard, Bonnier News and more

Until now, news organisations have struggled to track if, when, or how AI platforms are using their work, particularly as chatbots and search tools scrape data to generate responses for users.
