The Sunday Times iPad app was named as one of ten winners of the 2011 XMA Cross Media Awards, which recognise excellence in multi-platform delivery of content.
The annual prize was presented last night (10 October) by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) as part of its
World Newspaper Week in Vienna.
Each year the awards focus on a different topic, with paid-for content apps for smartphones and tablets taking the limelight this time round, with News International's Sunday Times iPad app taking the only prize for the UK. According to a release from WAN-IFRA the awards "
honour companies that are using a wide variety of platforms - print, web, mobile, video and more - to deliver editorial and advertising content in innovative ways."
This year's winning apps "showed how publishers are tailoring content to reach a desired audience, readers who are willing to pay for that content", the release added.
"I was very happy and proud to see that storytelling is dominating over simply technical details or design enhancements," Mario Garcia, CEO and founder of Garcia Media and a XMA juror said. "The editors, publishers and art directors seem to have made the story the protagonist. That’s a good thing, a fantastic lesson for all of us to get inspiration from." Other winners of the awards included Norwegian publisher Verdens Gang, or VG, which picked up two of the 10 prizes for its VG+ app and its TV guide for iPhone and iPad. Executive editor for VG Helje Solberg spoke at Journalism.co.uk's news:rewired conference last week about the company's recent integration of print and online operations.
