Sunday Times photographer Paul Conroy and French newspaper reporter Edith Bouvier have been rescued from the besieged Syrian city of Homs, according to a report from Reuters news agency this morning.

The two journalists were injured in a bombardment on Wednesday, which killed Sunday Times correspondent Marie Colvin and French photojournalist Remi Ochlik . According to Reuters , a senior diplomatic source following the situation said Conroy had been smuggled out of Homs and was "safe and sound" in Lebanon.

Bouvier, who is a reporter for Le Figaro newspaper in France, has also been rescued and is in Lebanon, a Syrian opposition source told the news agency .

UK Foreign Office officials have been working alongside the French embassy to rescue them since last week, following the rocket attack on the makeshift media centre where they were working.

Conroy had appealed for help in a video posted on YouTube , in which he said he sustained "three large wounds" to his leg in the attack and was being looked after by Free Syrian Army medical staff.

News International, publisher of the Sunday Times, has said it is not able to confirm the Reuters report.

Update 1.15pm

: A spokesman for the Sunday Times has confirmed that Conroy "is safe and in Lebanon" and "is in good shape and good spirits".
