Kingston local paper the Surrey Comet has relaunched this week in an effort to “modernise the paper” and “generate online growth”, assistant editor Julia Kennard told Journalism.co.uk.
The Newsquest-owned newspaper, which began in 1854, is hoping to boost sales and increase its readership from the current total of 16,354. The revamped edition will focus on news and culture, with a new spotlight on Kingston's "unsung heroes" in the Kingston life pages.
MP for Kingston and Surbiton, Edward Davey, and the One Show presenter Angellica Bell will both begin new features in the relaunched edition, with Bell heading up the "Mums The Word" column.
Kennard hopes the celebrity sections will increase the paper's online audience from its current 52,928 users.
"The drive behind the Surrey Comet relaunch was to provide our existing audience with an even better product and reach out to a new readers with the hope of boosting sales.
"Our focus was to revitalise and modernise the paper with fresh new design and added value content in the form of opinionated columnists and regular features."
