Three new journalism MA courses have been launched by Sussex University, in collaboration with local training centre, the Brighton Journalist Works. Five bursaries are also available , three of £2,000 (UK/EU) and two of £5,000 (overseas) for the three MA options: Journalism and Documentary Practice; Journalism and Media Studies; and Multimedia Journalism.
"We are launching now in response to a demand from people who want to study journalism at Sussex," said Journalist Works managing director Paula O'Shea.
They are looking for students with a "good first degree," she said. Training will include experience at the Argus in Brighton.
Digital skills are at the heart of the new degrees, O'Shea said. "Students will write for the online edition of the Argus from day one of their studies and benefit from start-of-the-art multimedia facilities and teaching at the university.
"They will learn how to build a website, blog, shoot and edit video and use social media while also studying for NCTJ exams."
"It has always been competitive to get into journalism. Now is no different. But to stand the best chance of success students need a multimedia course and plenty of practical experience on a real publication - that's what we are offering.
"It's a unique course which should give our graduates the edge when applying for jobs in this tricky market."
The closing date for the bursaries is 1 May . Details of applying for the MA can be found at this link .
