News International has closed Times Online, the former website of the Times newspaper, ahead of launching the planned paywall for its new Times and Sunday Times sites.

Times Online had been running in tandem with the new Times website, launched at the end of May , but disappeared yesterday. The old homepage and main section URLs, such as sport and news, now redirect to thetimes.co.uk. The new Times site , which is currently operating a free-to-register trial, will move behind a paywall at the end of June. Access to the Times and Sunday Times websites will cost £1 for a day pass or £2 for a week.

A search on the new site suggests that Times Online content has been integrated with the new site, as older articles appear under the new design. Times Online URLs are still active when searched for individually. A last screenshot of the Times Online was posted to Twitter by Times web development editor Joanna Geary yesterday , when the site was still hosting up-to-date news and content. The site had also been used to advertise the new-look Times and Sunday Times websites with a roadblock ad and links through to the new sites.
