The rate of magazine closures and new launches in the US and Canada both slowed in the first nine months of 2010, according to new figures from magazine database mediafinder.com .

In the first nine months of 2010, 176 new magazines were launched compared with 259 new magazines over the same period of 2009. Food magazines accounted for the most new launches with 24 new titles.

But the number of magazines closing also fell, from 383 in the first three quarters of 2009 to 127 for the same period this year. Home and sport magazine sectors were particularly affected in 2010, with 12 and 11 titles closing respectively, while 44 business-to-business magazines folded over the nine months.

According to the database, which is produced by Oxbridge Communications, there were 29 new business-to-business launches in 2010 and 14 print publications moved to online only formats.
