William Lewis is to head a new 'entrepreneurial unit' of 50 staff and has been named managing director of digital at the Telegraph.

Lewis, who has edited the paper since 2007, will remain editor-in-chief of the Daily Telegraph, the Sunday Telegraph and Telegraph.co.uk.

Lewis' current deputy, Tony Gallagher, has been appointed editor of the Daily Telegraph and Benedict Brogan, assistant editor and chief political commentator, will be his deputy.

"I am very excited by this new opportunity. As editor-in-chief I will continue to supervise the strategy and overall content of our newspapers and website, whilst working on our digital revenue streams," said Lewis in a release announcing the changes.

Chairman Aidan Barclay, and the Barclay family have invested 'millions of pounds' in the venture, he added.

"I believe now is the time to fast forward to the next stage of our digital transformation," said Murdoch MacLennan, chief executive, Telegraph Media Group.

"Using the Telegraph's powerful brand and reputation, Will has been charged with building a digital unit designed to capitalise on cutting edge ideas, driving new revenue streams by better serving our customers."

Lewis recently completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School.
