The firm behind Tindle Newspapers' paid-for digital editions has switched tactics to launch a free iPhone application for another regional news group.

PageSuite has produced the iPhone app for Kent on Sunday, which already uses the firm's page-turning technology for a digital replica of the print edition on its website.

The new, free-to-download app will offer digital editions of the daily newspaper title, as well as news videos and a live feed of breaking news stories. It will also feature car, job and property search tools and an option to browse news by region.

The application will also enable users to download individual pages or editions for offline reading.

"The timing of this launch has been planned to meet the massive iPhone demand over Christmas. This new application will only go to heighten the debate over free news content and pay walls. Our multimedia strategy through print, digital and iPhone will hold the real key to developing a more sustained business model within regional and national media," said Paul Stannard, managing director of Kent on Sunday Media, in a release .

The launch is the latest in a series of iPhone developments by newspaper publishers in the UK, following the Manchester Evening News' release of an app in October and today's paid-for version from the Guardian .

Kent on Sunday's app is PageSuite's first launch of its service for publishers on smartphones .
