Birmingham City University has launched a new freelance journalism course. An MA in Freelancing and Journalism Enterprise will run from September (subject to validation) looking at how to engage the audience in a digital world; relevant traditional skills; and using new media projects to make money.
The course is aimed at recent journalism graduates, or working journalists, who are looking to build a freelance career or create their own journalistic enterprise, Sue Heseltine, programme director and BCU senior lecturer, told Journalism.co.uk.
"The course will provide them with skills in online journalism and social networking, and also help them to become more entrepreneurial in their approach and outlook, so that they are more able to sell themselves and their ideas," she said.
"There will also be space to spend some time researching the current journalistic landscape so that students are better placed to understand what's going on and to spot any opportunities that might exist."
The programme is part of a range of new degrees launched by BCU for the next academic year and will cross-over with some courses, including the new MAs in online journalism and social media .
The 48-week course costs £4,400 and can be taken full-time or part-time to fit around existing journalistic work.
