Niiiws launches iPhone app reader of 'best of national press'

Niiiws, an app that aggregates the "best of the national press", has today launched for iPhone.

A UK edition of Niiiws was launched for iPad in June and followed Portuguese and Spanish versions of the app. Editions are now available for seven countries: France, Brazil, US, Ireland, plus Portugal, Spain and the UK. The app , which displays articles creating most buzz on social networks, organises content by traditional newspaper sections, such as 'world', 'politics' and 'sport'.

Users are also able to customise the app to see news with a particular tag, such as 'Syria', from a news outlet, or articles written by a particular journalist. Users can follow a journalist's work by tapping on an article written by that reporter and then using the 'plus' on the journalist's name (see image below).

João Martins, chief executive of muchBeta, which created Niiiws, explained why the app includes an option to follow an individual journalist. "The traditional press should give more value to its journalists," he told Journalism.co.uk.

Niiiws is a similar concept to other social newsreader apps, such as Zite and Flipboard, but positions itself as the app for reading national news rather than around a niche.

Martins said that research shows that more than 25 per cent of those who have downloaded the app use it daily.
