Role purpose and overview

Responsible for sub-editing features and lifestyle articles across The Telegraph, both in print and digital. You will ensure our journalism is produced to the highest quality for The Telegraph’s readers. You will be a sub-editor with a forensic grasp of copy, equally comfortable when writing or proofing, and able to craft sparkling headlines, with a keen eye for visuals. This role will be spread across both print and digital platforms but with a primary focus on print publishing. This is an in-office role.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure copy is accurate, well presented and optimised for the page, both in print and digital.
  • Sub-edit copy to the highest possible standard, always adhering closely to Telegraph style.
  • Work to tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom, without allowing pressure to affect the accuracy of your work.
  • Thoroughly factcheck Telegraph features and lifestyle articles.
  • Copy edit to a high standard, cutting digital articles to fit them for the print page.
  • Make use of the best pictures, video and other multimedia assets when building digital files.
  • Write attention-grabbing, smart and accurate headlines, standfirsts and captions that speak to the Telegraph audience.
  • When editing digital files, work with the digital publishing teams, SEO, social and visuals to ensure articles perform to their potential.

Essential skills required for the role

  • Quick, accurate subbing, ideally at a national level
  • Experience of working in production and publishing within features, lifestyle or longreads.
  • Experience of working on the production of a daily print section, with knowledge of InDesign and print CMS.
  • Knowledge of how best to present content for digital platforms – what makes a great headline and standfirst, how to build value-adding embeds and structure articles to appeal to mobile readers.
  • Able to respond well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.
