Nielsen//NetRatings has won the coveted contract to monitor web traffic on BBC.co.uk.

The three-year deal begins in January 2005, and aims to help the BBC improve its relationship with online users by providing more detailed analysis of the site's performance.

Around 40 companies are reported to have expressed interest in the original tender for the contract. Simon Nelson, BBC controller of interactive radio and music, oversaw the tendering process and reiterated the importance of the move.

"This agreement provides the BBC with the vital tools required to really understand why users come to bbc.co.uk, where they go within our site and what they look for from us," he said.
