The university newspaper is where many established journalists have had their first taste of the industry, trying their hand out at writing and editing.

But getting students outside the paper's editorial team to be interested in the issues that surround them on a daily basis is often a challenging task.

Dan Reimold, assistant professor of journalism at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, posed a question about best practices to engage with the audience in a recent training session called "Reinventing Student Media".

Among the tips offered by former and current student editors are rebranding with an eye-catching logo, hosting events to inform the community and making use of social media apps like Snapchat to cover events.
