There are a lot of elements to consider when covering breaking news, including your safety and that of those around you, verifying claims as you go along and choosing a social media platform for your coverage.

Kate Nash Cunningham, who teaches journalism at the University of New Mexico, recently incorporated a social media element into her students' breaking news assignment, that required them to cover a story within 48 hours after it broke, and to use Twitter or other social media platforms at least five times during that process.

She outlines some of her findings, which can be useful to both journalists and students who want to work on their live-tweeting skills, in this article on MediaShift. It includes practising how to craft tweets, covering a controversial event and juggling live coverage with taking notes and recording.
