Chas Hallett, formerly deputy editor of Autocar, has been appointed as its editor following the departure of Rob Aherne.

Mr Aherne leaves the title for a year's sabbatical, but has left his mark on the title and proves a tough act to follow after twice filling the editor's chair on Autocar, plus heading up What Car? and Motorsport News.

Mr Hallett has held various posts at What Car? on the road test desk and on Whatcar.com.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Hallett said: "We're the oldest and most-respected car magazine in the world but you only stay that way by being ahead of the game and relevant to readers. I fully intend to do that."

Publishing director, Patrick Fuller added: "I'm pleased that we've got the ideal man at the helm for what is going to be an exciting time for the magazine. Chas has masses of experience, talent and enthusiasm - perfect for taking Autocar forward."

Haymarket, publisher of Autocar, announced earlier this week that it is to strengthen its presence in the print and packaging sectors through the acquisition of Printing World and Packaging magazine from rival publisher CMP.
