High Court judge Mr Justice Eady is to be replaced as the senior media judge in England and Wales by Mr Justice Tugendhat, according to an announcement by the Judicial Communications Office.

The Lord Chief Justice made the announcement of the appointment of Mr Justice Tugendhat as Judge in Charge of the Queen's Bench Jury and Non-Jury Lists this week, which will take effect from 1 October.

According to the Judicial Communications Office, the Jury and Non-Jury lists include matters of clinical negligence, defamation and privacy. The Judge in Charge has responsibility for managing the work in the lists and assigning judges to cases.

Justice Eady has presided over many high-profile libel and privacy cases. Recent examples include Max Mosley's legal action against News Group Newspapers, where Eady awarded Mosley damages of £60,000 for invasion of privacy.

Earlier this year it was Justice Tugendhat who dismissed the claim for a super-injunction by former England football captain John Terry over reports of an alleged affair. Commenting on the news today the International Forum of Responsible Media blog said the choice of Justice Tugendhat as Justice Eady's successor will be welcomed by media practicitoners.

"Since 2002, the 'senior media judge' has had less and less 'jury work' and an increasingly specialist 'privacy' and human rights related case load. Mr Justice Tugendhat is exceptionally well qualified for this role and his appointment will be widely welcomed by practitioners."
