Research by Nielsen and NetRatings has revealed that eight of the top 20 US sites are affiliated to newspapers.
During April this year CNN.com, MSNBC.com, Yahoo!News, NYTimes.com, Gannett Newspapers and washingtonpost.com respectively gained the greatest audiences compared with other news sites.
Web magazines also ranked highly in the directory and local guide ratings, with CitySearch/Ticketmaster Online, Superpages.com and Yahoo!Yellow Pages beating the rest.
The survey was based on questionnaires sent to 60,000 Americans accessing the Web at work and at home.
