Web magazines can now set up their own specialised customer charging systems, heralding the end of the free internet.

Assent, a UK-based software company, has launched a convergent billing and rating system that allows websites to offer paying customers everything from vouchers to personalised accounts. The service, called UBS, can also be applied to gaming and mobile phones.

It offers tailor-made payment systems, including multi-level subsription fees.
