Industry think-tank the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) launched a new web site this week to provide a wealth of information on cookies, the web memory tool.

AllAboutCookies.org was established after consultation with web publishers, technology experts, marketeers and lawyers to provide a central web resource for the online publishing.

The IAB has been closely monitoring UK and EU regulation on data privacy and security issues, and aims to encourage self-regulation in the online publishing industry by raising awareness of issues through the site.

Cookies allow web sites to identify different users, providing information that web managers can use to monitor traffic and target advertising.

As well as comprehensive information on the legal and technical aspects of cookies, the site also offers advice on developing a 'cookie policy' for web publishing. An online questionnaire can help web managers to meet data protection and privacy regulations. All services on the site are currently free.

Barbara Newman, chair of IAB's e-commerce working group and senior marketing manager for new media at Yell, feels that the complex issues to do with cookies are not fully understood.

"Until now, there has been little clear information given to users about the whys and wherefores of cookies," she said. This site provides an excellent first port of call for online publishers."
