The Bevins Trust is calling for entries to its new award honouring outstanding investigative journalism.

The Bevins Prize has been founded in memory of political journalist Tony Bevins, who died in March 2001.

It is open to print, broadcast and online entries published or broadcast between June 1 2007 and May 31 2008, a press release said.

Entries for the award must be made by 11 August and the winner will receive a bronze statue of a rat up a drainpipe - one of Bevins' favourite sayings.

"It's never been more important to defend and celebrate decent, serious, power-probing journalism - what we were all told our trade was all about. This is a prize for somebody out there of mixed animal nature - dogged and ratlike - with a whiff of impertinence too," said Andrew Marr, who will present the award at the Society of Editors conference in Bristol in November.
