Journalists across the world hold power to account, in a bid to influence changes in society and laws. However, uncovering these stories is not often as simple as scrolling through Twitter.

Kristen Hare, reporter, Poynter, shared five tips on how journalists can find stories which have real impact by speaking to Jennifer Brett, journalist and digital coach with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Brett emphasised the need to escape the newsroom to uncover untold stories.

"News rarely happens in the newsroom. And, while it's important to pay attention to Twitter trending topics and to use tools like Chartbeat, Dataminr, Google trends etc. - a low-tech approach is often the key to finding and owning stories that are unique, exclusive and meaningful to your community," it reads.
