Livestreaming app Periscope launched in March and since then, over 10 million users registered have broadcasted 40 years' worth of Periscope content.

Journalists from a number of news organisations, including Bild and Time, have recently used the app to report on the refugee crisis in Europe and the app is useful for providing a first hand account of breaking and ongoing news events.

Poynter's Kristen Hare has put together a beginner's guide for using Periscope, for making the most of the platform's features and options to interact with the audience, which may not seem immediately apparent once you press the 'broadcast' button.

Her tips include keeping the commentary going while you're broadcasting, providing answers to viewers' questions, and finding a balance between staying put and including movement in your stream to give people a feel of what's happening at the scene.
