A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the saying goes.

In news, a good, strong photo works as a hook to draw people into your story, while a poorly chosen image can do exactly the opposite.

In this video on the BBC College of Journalism site, BBC News picture editor Phil Coomes sheds some light on the best kinds of images to accompany stories online, and the best layout to use.

He also explains a few ways to verify images posted to social media and the basic rules of image copyright.
