The Financial Times (FT) has appointed Victor Mallett, currently chief Asia correspondent, as the new editor of its Asian edition.

Mr Mallett will be replacing John Ridding who will become chief executive of the FT in June. In his new role, Mr Mallett will be responsible for the online and print Asia-Pacific editions of the FT.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Mallett said: "I'm thrilled to be leading the next exciting phase of the FT's growth in Asia, in print and online.

"We have excellent teams of reporters across the globe who give our readers in Asia-Pacific the highest quality of news, comment and analysis – and our correspondents here in Asia have proved unbeatable in informing the world about business developments in the most dynamic economies of the 21st century."

Editor of the Financial Times, Lionel Barber added: "Victor is an incisive and compelling commentator on Asian business and politics and is the natural choice to lead our Asia edition."

The FT veteran previously held various positions at the title including Africa correspondent, South-East Asia correspondent and Southern African correspondent.

• FT's success within Asia was awarded last week at the annual awards of the Society of Publishers in Asia, with Mr Mallett winning the opinion writing award for the second year running.
