The Orwell Society/NUJ Journalism Awards for 2024

Deadline: 7 April 2024

Details: The Orwell Society Young Journalist Award is aimed at those studying for a journalism qualification or starting out on a journalism career. The winner of each of the two categories (columns and reviews) will receive £1,000 and an NUJ membership. The runner-up in each category will receive a prize of £500. Winners and runners-up will also receive a three-year free membership of The Orwell Society.

Details: The Publisher Podcast Awards celebrate the best podcasts from around the world. The podcast must be from a publisher that releases content regularly and primarily in at least one other medium - print or online.

Mobile Journalism Awards

Details: The Mobile Journalism Awards is an annual global competition run by the Visual Editors non-profit to advance, identify and celebrate the best mobile journalism reporting each year. Winning work is featured in international screening events and winners receive prizes.

Headlinemoney Awards

Deadline: 2 February 2024

Details: The 2024 Headlinemoney Awards celebrate brilliant journalism and top-flight communications from across the UK’s financial press and media. The awards comprise categories both for individual journalists (Consumer and B2B) and media outlets covering different aspects of the financial marketplace. There are also trophies for individuals and press teams working in financial PR, media relations and communications. A key aspect of the awards is that all the winners are decided by their peers following an extensive submission, shortlisting and judging process.

ABSW Awards 2024

Details: The Association of British Science Writers Awards, dubbed ‘the Oscars of science journalism’, are the oldest established awards for science writing and have now been running for over 50 years. The awards reward bravery, flair and independence in science journalism setting the standards of excellence across thirteen categories.

The Day’s Global Young Journalist Awards (under 18s)

Deadline: Recurring (2023 just closed)

Details: The Global Young Journalist Awards is an annual youth journalism competition that aims to inspire future generations of journalists to build a better world through storytelling. The Awards are free to enter and anyone 18 or under anywhere in the world can enter their story in any journalism format they wish.

Journalists' Charity First Jobs Fund

Deadline: Rolling basis

Details: The Journalists' Charity was set up by Charles Dickens in 1864 to help journalists and their dependants going through tough times. Alongside the long-standing financial and welfare support the charity offers to journalists, it has launched a new initiative to support early-career journalists with some of the costs of starting out. The First Jobs Fund will help new journalists to cover accommodation, relocation, equipment and transport expenses and aims to promote fairer access into the industry.

Support applies to those that are new to journalism- either working in their first paid role, as a full-time freelance or about to start a new role with a firm offer letter.

Journalists' Charity Financial Assistance

Details: The Journalists' Charity was set up by Charles Dickens in 1864 to help journalists and their dependants going through tough times. The charity provides emergency support, financial assistance and confidential advice to journalists who are experiencing difficulty in both their career and personal lives.

Running grants and one-off payments are given to journalists to support them through a variety of personal circumstances. Support applies to journalists from every sector of the industry, nationwide.
